last week’s first-till the end of time green burial forum, in boulder, colorado, brought together the rough, eclectic mix of adherents that continue to bear out of pocket my long-on one’s feet belief that natural burial has the legs to go mainstream. there were students and septuagenarians. hospice workers. vegetarians and mbaers. cemetery operators and celebrants. a duo of funeral directors and many more home sepulture advocates. a few gutsy souls who had the moxie to demand the deathcare of their deceased into their own hands, not because they knew it was legal but because they felt it the right thing to do. unruffled a couple of attendees who’d never heard of natural obsequies but brainstorm it sounded gripping enough to allot a era erudition about. i gave a version of my ever-changing presentation on the current rhyme of the unskilled burial vista, with a yesteryear of death in early america and how it evolved into the more punctilious funerals of today. joe sehee, of the green interment council, provided an update on the unartificial cemeteries across the country he has helped start. the q&a sessions and open forums that followed provided an riveting window into how some are viewing the preservationist entombment movement and what issues the movement does and may face. some highlights:? green in wet behind the ears sepulture? a join in wedlock of businessmen wondered how to make unripened funeral pay out out. up to now, the natural cemetery has in great part provided a strategy that offers not just a dust-to-dust obsequies but a custom to can land from being developed. profit margins, to the extent there are any, are thin. to lengthen them, the mbaers talked of burying more bodies per acre than is currently the casing, partnering with management organizations, growing natural cemeteries on or within reach of the urban cores where large populations live. the defiance, as they acknowledged, is to do that and stay candidly to real-green conservation principles. ? authentic cemeteries may tie too innumerable visitors. one of the goals of the natural cemetery is to reconnect people with the capture, by inviting them to see it less as a graveyard than as nature preserve to captivate in. so it’s possible, a certain cemeterian noted, that locals influence overtax their natural cemeteries, arriving in huge numbers and despoiling the land in the prepare. ? ensuring that green cemeteries vestiges green. a great confusion from one of the green entombment neophytes: what’s to prevent the prospective holder of a green cemetery from deciding to, say, allow for the burial of embalmed bodies or metal caskets? for joe sehee the answer is in making unavoidable that green cemeteries partner with reputable conservation organizations, which act as ecological stewards of the land. that’s just the kind of arrangement he sets up with the conservation interment grounds he helps establish. not surprisingly, the boulder gathering was warm-hearted to natural burial. i’ll communiqu next week on the rejoinder i fix it from a tougher and, it is possible that, more distrust audience i’m addressing on monday: the interment directors who are attending the annual convention of the jingoistic funeral directors association in orlando. the photo vulnerable comes complements of clint crary, of get the ball rolling straight entombment. from left to quickly: karen van vuuren (founder/director, natural transitions), joe sehee, acquit oneself harris, laina corazon coit (founder, prairie wilderness cemeteries) and maeve conran (news farmer at kgnu radio). note: that’s a wicker coffin, distributed by passages, in the far right of the photo. purpose harrisauthor, grave matters (www.gravematters.us)

World Series Game Five Suspended; Phillies’ One-Run Lead Delayed Rain Delay [World Series]

For the entire World Series, it seems like the umpires had been under the mischievous magnifying glass of the sinister “Toy Story” neighbor Sid, just burning under the criticism. Little did you realize it’d go beyond the classic blown out-safe calls and wacky strike zones. Now it’s about when to roll a tarp onto a baseball field.

Greta wire

A rainy, muddy, quicksandy game continued to be played until B.J. Upton scored the tying run. And that set a crazy idea, boss, into the ump’s heads: “Um, hey, someone might get hurt out here. Also, Fieldin Culbreath seems to be shivering even more than usual.”)

So the game is suspended. When will it resume? Whenever Bud Selig says it will be safe to play again, and he doesn’t know when that is. He’s actually in a press conference right now, and no, I’m not even that foolish to attempt a live blog of it.

Stay tuned, I guess, for updates.

OK HERE’S A HILARIOUS UPDATE: SportsNet is reporting that the Rays checked out of their hotel in Philadelphia. That hotel is now booked solid. Life’s funny. Maybe just because of that, I’ll order room service again.

Less Hilarious But More Informative Update: The game will resume tomorrow (Tuesday) at 8 p.m. ET. Looks like we’ll be doin’ this again tomorrow! Same blog time, same blog channel. (Different blog post.)

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. seized WaMu on Thursday, and then sold the thrift’s banking assets to JPMorgan Chase & Co. for $1.9 billion.

Seattle-based WaMu, which was founded in 1889, is the largest bank to fail by far in the country’s history. Its $307 billion in assets eclipse the $40 billion of Continental Illinois National Bank, which failed in 1984, and the $32 billion of IndyMac, which the government seized in July.

One positive is that the sale of WaMu’s assets to JPMorgan Chase prevents the thrift’s collapse from depleting the FDIC’s insurance fund. But that detail is likely to give only marginal solace to Americans facing tighter lending and watching their stock portfolios plunge in the wake of the nation’s most momentous financial crisis since the Great Depression.

Because of WaMu’s souring mortgages and other risky debt, JPMorgan plans to write down WaMu’s loan portfolio by about $31

swirling around in the background as the wave of nostalgia continues to crash over the old yankee stadium are questions about who is paying for for -? and will benefit from ?- the $1.3-billion ballpark the yankees will inhabit next april.

Though it’s a New York story, these questions tend to surface whenever a new sports facility is proposed. Unless, that is, the stadium/arena/ballpark is financed entirely by private money.

Citing “previously secret and undisclosed legal documents, sworn testimony before Committees of the Legislature, and direct discussion with involved public and private persons,” New York Assemblyman Richard Brodsky last week used a congressional hearing in Washington, D.C., to allege that “in spite of public claims by elected officials and the Yankees, there are almost no new permanent jobs, private investment or local economic impact” to be generated by the project.

“The public is paying for the cost of construction of the new stadium,” Brodsky claimed, but “the massive ticket prices announced by the Yankees .?.?. will make Yankee games largely unaffordable to the very taxpayers who are paying for it.”

And that ugly assessment came even before the troubled financial markets took a huge bite out of the Big Apple’s economy.

At the core of Brodsky’s argument is a disagreement over the value of land underneath the new stadium. How much that dirt costs is important because the value of tax-exempt bonds like those being used to finance new Yankee Stadium depend in part upon the assessed value of what’s underneath.

The assessment that the city used to qualify the Yankee Stadium project for tax-exempt bonds set the value of that land at $204 million. A second assessment done by the National Parks Service set the value at between $21 million and $28 million. A third assessment came in at $40 million.

Sprouse twins

The Yankees and New York City officials say that nothing improper occurred, and that the stadium project makes financial sense for fans in particular and taxpayers in general.

Critics, including U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Cleveland), who chaired last week’s congressional hearing, suspects that taxpayers aren’t getting a fair shake in these deals.

The rate of HIV infection among injecting drug users appears to be rising, researchers say.

The report, published in the British medical journal The Lancet, says 3m self-injecting drug users worldwide could now be HIV-positive.

In nine countries, more that 40% of drug users were infected.

The authors are concerned about the lack of data from Africa and say the risk factors that have helped spread HIV in this way exist on the continent.

They said there was a “pressing need” to address the problem.

The scientists behind this study, frmo the University of New South Wales in Australia, carried out a wide-ranging review of published data.

They concluded that both the numbers of injecting drug users and the prevalence of HIV infection among them are on the increase.

The virus is spread mainly by the use of shared needles.

In some countries in South East Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe the rates of infection among injecting users are above 40%. In Estonia it is more than 72%.

But some countries have maintained very low rates of infection, such as the UK - where the rate is 2.3% - New Zealand and Australia where only 1.5% of injecting drug users are HIV-positive.

ICDDR,B: Bangladesh HIV Surveillance - 6th Round
… out serological surveillance annually since 1998 and from the very beginning has recorded the highest HIV rates among injection drug users. This rate has been steadily rising over …

Needle exchange

Researchers say that this was due to the swift introduction of needle exchange programmes in the 1980s.

The report says that there is a clear mandate to invest in HIV prevention programmes such as needle exchanges and drug substitution treatments.

There is also a clear need for education to help prevent the spread of infection in countries where injecting drug use is common but where the virus has not yet become widespread among users.

“The high prevalence of HIV among many populations of injecting drug users represents a substantial global health challenge,” the authors say.

Michael Carter, of the HIV information service NAM, said the report provided “striking evidence” to support the provision of needle exchange programmes.

He said: “The UK has historically low rates of HIV amongst injecting drug users because we put health promotion first.

“Compare this to the HIV prevalence in countries which have resisted the provision of needle exchanges in the misguided belief that they ‘encourage’ drug use.”

Preventing HIV Infection among Injecting Drug Users in High Risk …
However, both the continued increase in the number of injecting drug users and the rising HIV prevalence rates among both injecting drug users and sex workers could signal that a …

Mr Carter added there was good evidence that IDUs can do very well on anti-HIV treatment - but often stigma and discrimination meant that they were denied potentially life-saving drugs.

Ailsa Spindler, of the charity Terrence Higgins Trust Scotland, said: “There is a long way to go globally in tackling IDU, its causes and its effects on health, including HIV transmission.”

She said health among IDUs was “relatively good” in the UK, but the number of new HIV diagnoses among the group had increased gradually over the past five years.

At Lane Kiffin Press Conference, Raiders Executive, Reporter Nearly Come to Blows

Filed under: Raiders, NFL Media Watch, NFL Video

the video underneath comes from the press conference that oakland raiders prompt lane kiffin had today. and what looks at first like an ordinary force congress (at least, as uninspired as it can get for a coach who doesn’t know if he’s going to be fired today or not) turns into a imminent-fistfight:at the end of the video, tim kawakami of the san jose mercury news nearly gets into a fight with raiders president john herrera, who is probably the closest person in the configuration to owner al davis. kawakami gives his side of what happened here.mike florio of pro football talk explains that the enthusiasm was fallout from the thoroughly held axiom that herrera distributed an article critical of kiffin to members of the local media. rear Theatre sides: the raiders’ holder and his top intermediary are doing their best to damage the drill, while the motor coach waits to get fired and the media scarcely draw nigh to blows with team executives. yeah, i’d say they’ve got a real healthy thingummy going on in oakland.

Time to Rename “Airplane Mode”?

for months now i’ve been stressing the need to get offline. that is, the more we do online, the more there is a need to go offline and go outside. with internet access coming to airplanes, is there anywhere that is a acceptable-zone? there’s no net access in most of the nyc subway but you can interact with your mobile device while underground. in the morning near my train station i see many people standard outside the instal looking at their devices before they head down.

Last night at the Eluma party I hosted, I spoke about the slow moving trend to useful apps instead of more social networks or more ability to poke people. It just so happens that useful apps are ones that people will actually pay for and could do very well in the current economic market.

After my talk, several people noted that Tim O’Reilly noted something similar in his keynote at the Web 2.0 Expo in NYC. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to make it so here are a few recaps on Drama 2.0, Profy and More Ramblings.

Last night I checked out one of my favorite bloggers, Jan Chipchase, who has an excellent essay titled, “A Little Switch With a Big Impact”. The switch Jan refers to is the “airplane mode” switch on the iPhone. The switch basically turns off all of the wireless connectivity functions of the iPhone so you can utilize the offline functions while on a plane. It’s a must read essay.

Jan looks at the issues of disconnecting your mobile for a number of reasons. There’s the usual reason of going into flight, but there are many other reasons including wanting to be offline. Some turn on airplane mode to extend the iPhone 3G battery life. One of the more interesting parts of the essay looks at how mobile devices are used when they are offline and should developers be considering this as they build their apps.

Jan notes, “What can you do with a connected/communications device when it has no connectivity? Again we can turn to emerging markets to learn from the usage behaviours of pre-pay customers who have run out of credit - they continue to use the phone as a status symbol, a clock, games machine etc. The bottom line - never equate ownership of a connected device with use of its primary function particularly when use of the primary function costs money.”

I leave you with this… NY-based Meetup has created a campaign named, “unplug your friends”. While the campaign pushes the use of Meetup (they make money on going outside), the video below certainly hits home for many people.
