Bree Gallery is a sparkling addition in Roslindale

Bree 1

Jewelry lovers and curious neighbors packed the new gallery at 4266 Washington St. in Roslindale last Friday night for a special grand opening. Formerly occupied by Pazzo Books, the space is now the home of Bree, featuring the jewelry of Jamaica Plain designer Bree Richey.

Richey has been designing silver jewelry for the past seven years, and sells it wholesale across the United States. She was enjoying dinner at Geoffrey’s Café across the street this spring and noticed the “for rent” sign at Pazzo Books, which has since relocated to Centre Street in West Roxbury.

“I wanted to rent some studio space and also have a gallery,” said Richey. “I looked across the street, and it was kind of like divine intervention.”

Richey attended the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts as well as the Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts in San Francisco and apprenticed with jewelry designers. Her collection pulls directly from her love for art deco and modern architectural design to create elegant and highly wearable pieces.

Her necklaces, bracelets and earrings feature three-dimensional pieces of silver with varying finishes, accented by baubles such as crystals, pearls and beads. In addition to what Richey features in her display cases, she also customizes pieces in almost any color imaginable, perfect for bridesmaids’ gifts and one-of-a-kind accents.

She’s looking forward to getting customer reactions — something she rarely gets now selling her pieces wholesale.

“I wanted to create a relaxing and soothing space that people could come into and have a nice time,” said Richey of her gallery. “Even if they don’t buy something, every time someone responds to my pieces, I get new ideas.”

But Richey doesn’t plan to run things on her own. Husband Eddie Adams maintains her Web site at www.breeboston.com; sister Amanda Richey of West Roxbury serves as her accountant; and mother Marlene Richey, also of Jamaica Plain, will run the gallery while Bree is downstairs creating her pieces.

“We chose this place because we can all walk here,” Bree Richey said.

Friends Maria Fernandez and Lisa Ruberti, both of Jamaica Plain, stopped by the opening to enjoy some wine and cheese, and to browse in the new gallery.

“I don’t like cookie-cutter pieces from the jewelry store,” said Fernandez. “[Bree’s pieces] are very unique and different.”

Ruberti even wore a woven pearl necklace made by Richey to her wedding.

“It was the most gorgeous piece, and everyone gave me so many compliments,” she said.

While Richey continues to sell her jewelry wholesale, she’s excited to meet her neighbors as a new Roslindale business owner.

“I’m looking for a long-term relationship with Roslindale,” she said. “Other business owners have been very welcoming, and people from the neighborhood have stopped by.”
